Farmer Co-op: Norandino

Origin:
Piura, Peru

Elevation:
1,100-1,400 MASL

In a world where gender inequalities persist, cooperatives offer transformative potential, as organizations rooted in democratic principles.

Norandino Cooperative from Northern Peru is a pioneer in this work. Several years ago, Norandino committed to advancing gender equity, and now have much to show for it:

  • gender equity goals in their business strategic plan

  • a salary structure equally compensating women and men in similar positions

  • a sexual harassment policy and response protocols

These specifics are grounded in an ongoing commitment to socialize what gender equity means to them as a co-op and community.

Norandino Co-op has been a participant in Equal Exchange’s Cooperative Development Program (CDP), which works with a select number of our farmer co-ops partners in an ongoing way on key topics, gender equity being one of them.

This work, over 5 years, has led to a train-the-trainer guide created by our Gender Equity Specialist Leslie Rosales. In July, Rosales hosted a 2-day workshop in Sullana, Peru. Called “Gender and Cooperation,” this workshop brought together 3 participating Peruvian co-ops, and incorporated cooperative learning principles to explore and test out the training guide.

Claudia Vasquez represented Norandino Co-op at this workshop and she offered this reflection: “The CDP’s efforts on gender issues have had a significant impact by challenging stigmas and transforming concepts within the work team.” Although Norandino has already advanced many progressive changes, Vasquez sees value in continuing to learn alongside leaders in other co-ops as well, “The shared space in Sullana provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on gender barriers in various organizations and acquire tools that promote equality through awareness and training.”

The July workshop validated this participation-based model. Equipped with detailed instructions, trainers learned to navigate topics that can be sensitive and personal for the participating audience. As a result of this successful pilot, the program will soon be available as a written guide to train additional future leaders as well.

Vasquez left the training with renewed inspiration, “Although we recognize that there is still much to be done, especially with regard to the incorporation of more women in decision-making roles, we are confident that we are taking fundamental steps to overcome these challenges.”

Organic Cold Brew

Farmer Groups: Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union & SOPACDI

Origins:
Ethiopia, D.R. Congo

Varietals:
Bourbon, SL-14 & SL-28

Elevation:
1300-1888 MASL

This cold brew coffee blend was specifically designed to be smooth and chocolatey, but it also tells the story of co-ops in Africa that have formed a new bond across geographic and cultural borders. The origins of this blend are exquisite, each reaching elevations that surpass 1,500 MASL. On these high slopes, farmers work hard to cultivate great quality beans. In 2011, we began working with the small farmer co-op SOPACDI and were excited to introduce the US specialty market to coffee from the DRC. Beth Ann, our Quality Manager, noted that this young co-op didn’t have a cupper on staff, and she offered to help them find and train one. Over the last 2 and a half years, we have supported both this person and this vital function through training and crossborder exchanges with our producer partners in Ethiopia. Here is how that work has unfolded:

2012: Beth Ann travels to DRC to help identify a copper for SOPACDI: Dunia ‘Moises’ Muhindo.

2013: Moises travels by bus to Uganda to work on roasting and cupping with Beth Ann and Anne Marie, the cupper from Gumutindo co-op.

2014: Beth Ann returns to DRC to work with Moises on intermediate cupper training.

2015: Moises flies to Ethiopia to meet Mike, Equal Exchange’s Coffee Quality Coordinator for a 4-day seminar with Quality Manager Dame Regassa of Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union.
