Changing to Compostable Chocolate Packaging

At Equal Exchange, our commitment to sourcing responsibly extends from the ingredients in our products to the packaging materials we use. We understand that packaging is crucial for maintaining the quality and freshness of the products farmers work hard to grow. That's why we're dedicated to using the most environmentally conscious options that meet our high standards, ensuring our products taste delicious until you take them home.

We’re excited to announce that we are in the process of transitioning from our current white inner wrapper, which is made of #5 recyclable plastic, to a more environmentally-friendly, plastic-free, and compostable film that will still ensure the same level of freshness and preservation for our chocolate bars. Our new inner wrappers are home compostable and come with this message printed on the clear film, as shown. Keep an eye out for these new clear wrappers as we transition over time!

Clear, compostable, and plastic-free

Our clear inner wrappers are industrial and home compostable. This new wrapper is plastic-free and made from wood pulp sourced from FSC-certified responsibly managed forests. It is certified to be acceptable for both industrial and home composting.

Inner wrapper certifications:

  • Industrial Compostability: Certified EN13432, EN14995, AS4736 ASTM D6400 and ISO 17088

  • Home Compostability: Certified OK compost HOME, AS5810, NFT51-800

  • Anaerobic Digestion: Approved ISO 15985

The outer paper wrapper is made of acid-free, FSC-certified paper with vegetable-based ink printing and can be recycled.
